Classes at Karate for Kids

Karate is the oldest and most traditional form of self defence teaching strong basics, respect and good discipline. Sensei Caroline has adapted these values into the classes to suit todays' young student.

Nine basic life skills

Students of Karate for Kids are taught nine basic life skills -

  1. Focus
  2. Self Control
  3. Memory
  4. Fitness
  5. Teamwork
  6. Balance
  7. Discipline
  8. Co-ordination
  9. Respect

Our kids have good role models to follow and being in the class helps them develop a positive attitude which results in greater self confidence and improved self esteem.

What we learn

In every class a student learns that:

It is not ok to use the skills you have learnt in an aggressive way
Karate is to be used in the dojo and not on friends or family
It is ok to say "NO" to a bully
It is better to run away rather than stand and fight
Always go to a teacher or someone in charge if you are in trouble
Train safely and responsibly

Children are more secure with repetition so each class is generally the same format. Repetition gives them a feeling of security and the security gives them confidence.

During every class we focus on the nine basic life skills, regardless of the age of the student. There are ways of introducing these skills and Sensei Caroline has many years expereince in making sure everything she says and does comes back to one of the nine basic life skills.

Every class includes

  • Basic karate skills including kick, punch, block
  • Fitness, flexibility and co-ordination exercises
  • Self defence moves that are easy and simple
  • Self defence practice with partners
  • Easy and fun training drills
  • Sparring with partners (for the older kids)
  • Training is interspersed with games, drills and exercises

Karate is a great skill that everyone can learn

Sensei Caroline is very approachable and happy to have a chat to you before you join Karate For Kids. She's been running Karate For Kids for over 25 years and has welcomed many, many children to her classes. She must be doing something right! :)

Ages stick together

At Karate For Kids students are put into the most appropriate class. It doesn't matter how good the students are, their participation in the different classes is based a lot on their age, maturity and ability to listen, concentrate and improve. Sensei Caroline has found that keeping the ages together is the best way of ensuring the students have a positive and confidence boosting experience with their karate training.

Classes are held on Monday afternoons from 4.30pm and on Friday afternoons from 5.30pm.

To find out which class your child should attend please contact Sensei by phone or email. She'll talk to you and help you find the right class to ensure a happy student and a positive outcome. Go to the Contact page for phone and email details.

A little information on our Sensei

Sensei Caroline Manly

Sensei Caroline started training in Goju Karate in 1983 and was awarded her first black belt in 1989. She started teaching in 1987 and opened the Karate for Kids school in 1989. She plans each lesson to ensure they are well rounded. She says it is important to incorporate every aspect of Karate for Kids into each lesson - exercise, flexibility, co-ordination, discipline, self defence as well as a bit of fun. Sensei Caroline says "I have always trained in Goju Karate, an ancient and traditional style, and I make sure my classes reflect the good basics and strong discipline that Goju Karate is known for."

Class in Action!!

Note from Sensei Caroline:

I was going through my computer files the other day and I came across an old video of one of my classes. It was so lovely to see the kids in action that I posted it onto youtube. If you click on the following youtube link you'll be able to see some "vintage" footage.

I hope you enjoy it.
