Class Information

Karate is the oldest and most traditional form of self defence teaching strong basics, respect and good discipline. Sensei Caroline has adapted these values into the classes to suit todays' young student.

Students of Karate for Kids are taught nine basic life skills -

  1. Focus
  2. Self Control
  3. Memory
  4. Fitness
  5. Teamwork
  6. Balance
  7. Discipline
  8. Co-ordination
  9. Respect

Our kids have good role models to follow and being in the class helps them develop a positive attitude which results in greater self confidence and improved self esteem.

In every class a student learns that:

• It is not ok to use the skills you have learnt in an aggressive way
• Karate is to be used in the dojo and not on friends or family
• It is ok to say "NO" to a bully
• It is better to run away rather than stand and fight
• Always go to a teacher or someone in charge if you are in trouble
• Train safely and responsibly

Children are more secure with repetition so each class is generally the same format. Repetition gives them a feeling of security and the security gives them confidence.

During every class we focus on the nine basic life skills, regardless of the age of the student. There are ways of introducing these skills and Sensei Caroline has many years expereince in making sure everything she says and does comes back to one of the nine basic life skills.

All classes include:
  • Basic karate skills including kick, punch, block
  • Fitness, flexibility and co-ordination exercises
  • Self defence moves that are easy and simple
  • Self defence practice with partners
  • Easy and fun training drills
  • Sparring with partners (for the older kids)
  • Training is interspersed with games, drills and exercises

Are you interested in joining Karate For Kids?

Karate is a great skill that everyone can learn

Sensei Caroline is very approachable and happy to have a chat to you before you join Karate For Kids. She's been running Karate For Kids for over 25 years and has welcomed many, many children to her classes. She must be doing something right! :)

At Karate For Kids there are two classes available. It doesn't matter how good the students are, their participation in the different classes is based a lot on their age, maturity and ability to listen, concentrate and improve. Sensei Caroline has found that keeping the ages together is the best way of ensuring the students have a positive and confidence boosting experience with their karate training.

Class One is for children aged 5 years and 6 years. Class One trains on a Monday afternoon from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

Class Two is for children aged from 7 years to 12 years.  Class Two trains on a Monday afternoon from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

Join Karate For Kids now and reap the benefits by following this easy procedure...

Step One:

Call or email Sensei Caroline to find out what class your child should join. Take this opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Step Two:

Come along to the class and watch it in progress. This way you can see if you are going to enjoy being part of Karate For Kids.
At the end of the class have a chat to Sensei and arrange to participate in a basic training session.

Step Three:

Attend a Basic Training Session.  These sessions are held in a separate room and usually run by Sensei herself. This is your opportunity to learn some basic techniques from a very experienced instructor. You will need to have completed one Basic Training Session before you join any of the classes.

Step Four:

Complete the required paperwork including email contact and mobile contact and get fitted for your karate uniform.

Step Five:

Join the class that Sensei has put you in.

Step Six:

Enjoy!

A few points to remember:

  1. All new students must attend a Basic Training Session before joining any general class
  2. New student intake is held over the first 3 weeks of any term so a new student can join Karate For Kids during week 1, 2 or 3 of any term
  3. If you miss the intake you can still come along and watch a class but you must wait until the beginning of the following term to join and participate in a Basic Training Session.

Sensei Caroline Manly

Sensei Caroline started training in Goju Karate in 1983 and was awarded her first black belt in 1989. She started teaching in 1987 and opened the Karate for Kids school in 1989. She plans each lesson to ensure they are well rounded. She says it is important to incorporate every aspect of Karate for Kids into each lesson - exercise, flexibility, co-ordination, discipline, self defence as well as a bit of fun. Sensei Caroline says “I have always trained in Goju Karate, an ancient and traditional style, and I make sure my classes reflect the good basics and strong discipline that Goju Karate is known for.”

Here's an old photo of Caroline with Sensei Morio Higaonna, a top graded instructor from Japan

Class in Action!!

Note from Sensei Caroline:

I was going through my computer files the other day and I came across an old video of one of my classes. It was so lovely to see the kids in action that I posted it onto youtube. If you click on the following youtube link you'll be able to see some "vintage" footage.

I hope you enjoy it.
